No one knows Taos who did not know it as it was then,
in the last full effulgence of its sinking sun.

Frank Waters, Leon Gaspard, 1964

"...It is comforting, however to think of the legend of how the first Taos Indians came to live in Taos Valley, and why (still in the 1940’s) they cut out the seats of their pants and wrapped their blankets around their posteriors:

Before the time of remembering, the Indians lived in quite a different part of the world. There came a great drought. The crops dried up; the animals died; and the people were starving. They prayed to their gods to help them.

A magical sight appeared: a brilliantly beautiful and bewitching rainbow revealed itself. The Indians climbed to the very top of the rainbow, then slid down the other side, in the process wearing out the seats of their deerskin trousers.

Miracle of miracles: they found themselves transported into a beautiful, fertile valley, with a stream and mountains all around -- Taos Valley!

One can believe the legend or not. I do, but then I believe in unicorns, too."

in Taos Then

"Taos Then is a delight. The author's charm and wit slip off the pages so easily that readers may not even notice how much they actually learn about this vibrant community at its height in the 1940s. Add to this a series of elegant sketches and watercolors and Taos Then becomes something to truly savor."
